Dogs of the Pug breed pay attention to where they pass. It is no wonder that the size, the brachycephalic characteristic and the temperament are some of the peculiarities that makes it one of the preferred races among the Brazilians.
So many peculiarities of this animal also bring with it singular cares and, likewise, unique pathologies like that which receives the name of the breed: encephalitis pug. This pathology is characterized by a neurological disease that is part of the necrotizing meningoencephalitis complex, characterized by lesions in the cerebral cortex and subcortical.
Romão explains that the etiology of pug encephalitis is not yet known. "There are theories that criminalize viruses, immune-mediated disorders and genetic predisposition, but none have yet been confirmed." About the first signs, he comments that they are usually related to the brain syndrome and may involve seizures, behavior change, walking in circles, ataxia, lethargy, among others.
As Felipe Romão explains, there are currently no forms of prevention. "It should be avoided the reproduction of animals affected by neurological signs, because it is believed that there is a genetic factor," he says.
